The calls to transition away from fossil fuels have elicited a wave of political responses from producer nations and debates about how to manage change. Geopolitical tensions further complicate fossil fuel decline, potentially leading to conflicts that threaten energy security, the availability of affordable energy services, agreement on how to phase out, and the pace of emissions reduction.
This project examines the geopolitical economy of fossil fuel phase down at this crucial time through two inter-related projects that will run in parallel:
- Fossil Fuel Producers and Economic and Political Transition Risks
- Energy Security in an Era of Conflict
Research will link to global scenarios, developed by e.g. IEA, IPCC, and Shell, and a new Chatham House project on climate geopolitics, and will be developed in close collaboration with our research on Delivering Energy Infrastructure.
