This integrated project explores the critical issue of energy security in the context of a rapidly changing global environment. It is split into three main sub-projects.
Gas Security and Transition Risk
This project examined the current and future of gas use in the UK, in respect to the net zero transition and geopolitical shifts. It drew on the multifaceted challenges and opportunities associated with maintaining energy security while addressing environmental, economic, and social considerations.
Industrial Strategy and the Low Carbon Supply Chain Challenge
Research was undertaken to examine how the organisation of global supply chains is influencing the shape and pace of the UK’s transition towards a low carbon energy system. This was achieved by contextualising the current concerns around the energy transition in reference to industrial strategy and national security, this project identified where and how selected global supply chains (central to the UK’s low carbon energy transition) intersect with UK national and regional economies, and drew together learning from existing UKERC projects and build effective research links with non-UKERC research partners.
Developing UK Energy Security Metrics Fit for Net Zero
There has been a dramatic rise in wholesale and retail energy prices in the UK since 2021 following the war in Ukraine, revealing energy security vulnerabilities in the UK and neighbouring states. To address this problems, this research is developing a framework and set of metrics and recommendations for better measurement and monitoring of UK energy security on the path to net zero.
