Electrification is expected to deliver the bulk of emissions reductions for energy-intensive industry, meaning that flexible industrial electricity demand could play a crucial role in helping to ease pressure on the grid. This report summarises the key findings from a one-day expert stakeholder workshop, which explored the opportunities and challenges for industrial consumer-led flexibility and identified the research priorities needed to support its development.

The following key areas were identified for further research

  1. Calculate the technical potential for flexibility by sector and process, and map this across Great Britain.
  2. Develop a methodology to assess the economic flexibility potential across different regions.
  3. Map incentives for current and future markets to understand how they could encourage participation.
  4. Quantify peak industrial energy use across Great Britain by time of day, to pinpoint where flexibility could deliver the greatest benefit.
