This project originally intended to draw on work from ‘The politics of UK and European energy policy interactions’ project and pathways from Theme 1 to consider what market developments have been proposed at a European level and which could be implemented under different conditions.
Through integrated engineering and economic analysis led by Professor Richard Green at Imperial College, the project was to test the likely effects of different market developments under a range of credible future energy pathways and analyse the effectiveness, from a UK perspective, of different sets of Europe-wide trading arrangements thus helping to inform UK engagement with European initiatives.
In the light of the referendum result of June 2016, the research is now focusing on alternative ways in which Brexit might be implemented, with potential frictions to day-to-day trading, and possible future interconnector projects abandoned.
