The Energy Security and Net Zero Committee heard oral evidence on the UK’s future energy technology mix last Wednesday, March 6th. Witnesses included UKERC Director Rob Gross, Tim Ambler, Senior Fellow, Adam Smith Institute; Dr Doug Parr, Chief Scientist and Policy Director, Greenpeace UK and Professor Jim Watson, Director of the Institute for Sustainable Resources, University College London.
UKERC’s written evidence emphasised the importance of strategic planning as we go through the transition, including a planned approach to the long-term phase out of gas. Oral evidence was curtailed as a result of the spring Budget, but Prof Gross and colleagues discussed the potential for a fossil fuel-free future, retaining security of supply and the importance of clear policy. UKERC was well-represented on the day, with Prof Keith Bell providing evidence to the preceding panel on behalf of the Climate Change Committee, and former Director Jim Watson joining Rob on the panel.
