The UKERC-funded Energy SHINES project is one of only two UK finalists in the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion in Sustainability category of the Green Gown Awards for 2023.
The transition to net-zero has presented energy-related challenges across all sectors, but research has traditionally centred on male-dominated, technical disciplines. An alternative approach is being championed by the UKERC-funded Energy-SHINES project.
Over six placement projects, women doctoral researchers have worked in partnership on the real-world challenges with the UK government, National Health Service, Yorkshire Water, Cambridgeshire County Council and the Royal Institute of British Architects. By bringing early career women researchers into the conversation, fresh perspectives from the social sciences and humanities (SSH) are provided to support the transition towards net-zero.
The project has also included training and networking events, and a workshop for 30 women researchers from SSH disciplines.
Energy SHINES researchers will produce open-access briefs and a project report that will be available on the UKERC website from September 2023 onwards, and will be discussing their work in a series of forthcoming blog posts and a podcast.
