Centre for Net Zero and Energy Systems Catapult release paper on net zero building metrics

07 Feb 2025

The Centre for Net Zero and Energy Systems Catapult have released their latest paper calling for the introduction of net zero building metrics – including a measurement of a building’s ability to flex its demand to align with clean electricity.

The paper builds on their previous calls for a ‘Smart Building Rating’ (SBR), designed to incentivise consumer demand for smart homes. It expands on the SBR’s use cases in green finance, network planning and consumer engagement. Centre for Net Zero, founded by Octopus Energy Group and Energy Systems Catapult, have also developed a proof-of-concept tool for consumers to check how smart their home is.

The report has been published in the middle of the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government’s live consultation on Energy Performance Certificates, which closes at the end of February. The consultation proposes using multiple metrics on EPCs to provide a more complete representation of building energy performance.

The ‘Smart Building Rating’ is backed by a cross-industry coalition of supporters: UK Green Building Council (UKGBC), Octopus Energy, Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks, Energy Saving Trust, Good Energy, Perenna, E3G, RICS, Thermal Storage UK, Electrify Britain, REA, The Association for Decentralised Energy, tepeo, Etude, iknowa, Sunamp, Heat Pump Federation and Genius Energy Lab (Ground Source Heat Pump System and Heat Network Designers).
