ClimateXChange (CXC) wishes to commission analysis of the complex and evolving regulatory environment for three key hydrogen derivatives in Scotland: ammonia, emethanol, and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This research will build a foundational understanding of the regulatory landscape for derivatives production and be used to support strategic policy development.
Scotland needs significant new infrastructure to develop a hydrogen derivatives industry. This includes building large-scale electrolyser plants, derivative synthesis facilities, storage, transport networks, and marine refuelling installations. Initial analysis finds that policymakers, investors and industry currently face a fragmented and complex landscape of regulations and standards, spanning international maritime and aviation bodies, UK regulators and devolved Scottish authorities.
This research will be the third pillar of hydrogen derivatives research by ClimateXChange, following work on (1) “the demand for hydrogen derivatives and products in Scotland and internationally” and (2) “Scotland’s industrial and supply-chain capabilities to produce hydrogen derivatives and products.”
