Rising Block Tariffs: Implications for Social Tariff Design and Consumers

07 May 2026. 10:00

The webinar will explore the findings of our latest Policy Brief, which examines whether rising block electricity tariffs can function as a cost neutral, progressive form of social tariff in Great Britain.

Rising block tariffs can, in principle, lower bills for low consumption (and often lower income) households, and increase bills for high consumption (and often higher income) households. However, considering a plausible block tariff structure, analysis shows that many households living in fuel poverty within lower income groups are likely to face higher bills.

This webinar will feature presentations from Paulina González‑Martínez and Christian Calvillo on the research, and an opportunity to ask them questions directly on the brief, and the topic of tariffs more widely. The discussion will be chaired by Jess Britton.
