Special Session Title: Electricity-Hydrogen Interaction for Smart Grids and Net Zero Energy Systems

Brief Introduction: The rapid deployment of renewable generation, electrification and hydrogen technologies is reshaping the role of electricity networks in future energy systems. Hydrogen is increasingly recognised as a strategic flexibility resource that can support power system balancing, renewable integration, industrial decarbonisation and long-duration energy storage. At the same time, large-scale hydrogen production, transport and end-use introduce new operational and planning challenges for smart grids.

This Special Session invites papers on the interactions between electricity and hydrogen systems, with a particular focus on how such interactions can complement smart grid technologies and enable secure, flexible and low-carbon energy transitions. The session is jointly organised by researchers from the UK Hydrogen Integration for Accelerated Energy Transitions (HI-ACT) Hub, the Supergen Energy Networks (SEN) Impact Hub, and the UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC), bringing together expertise in hydrogen integration, multi-energy networks, whole-system analysis and stakeholder engagement.

Topics include (but are not limited to):

  • Grid impacts of electrolysers, hydrogen production and hydrogen demand
  • Hydrogen-enabled flexibility for power system operation and balancing
  • Co-planning of electricity and hydrogen infrastructure
  • Smart grid operation with hydrogen energy storage and flexible resources
  • AI- and data-driven forecasting, optimisation and control for integrated electricity-hydrogen systems
  • Digital twins and cyber-physical approaches for smart electricity-hydrogen networks
  • Regional hydrogen integration and distribution network planning
  • Market design, regulation and business models for electricity-hydrogen integration
  • Demonstration projects and real-world case studies of smart electricity-hydrogen systems.
