Casting a long shadow: the role of long-distance travel in carbon emissions from passenger travel

02 December 2024. 17:00

Online Seminar with the Transport Statistics User Group (TSUG): Professor Zia Wadud: Professor Zia Wadud: Casting a long shadow: the role of long-distance travel in carbon emissions from passenger travel.

Our next seminar will use data from the International Passenger Survey & National Travel Survey to look at the split of long and short distance journeys and use this to calculate total carbon emissions from both. This will show that the bulk of carbon emissions come from long distance journeys (3% of trips, 60% of miles, 70% of emissions from passenger travel), and highlight the importance of the long-distance trips for decarbonisation, since these trips and miles have been increasing over time, too.

Our speaker is Zia Wadud, Professor of Mobility and Energy Futures at the University of Leeds. He holds a joint appointment in the University’s Institute for Transport Studies and School of Chemical and Process Engineering.

This seminar will be held online at 17:00 on Monday 2nd December.
