This project is investigating the spatial planning reforms designed to integrate transport, vehicle charging and energy needs in new housing.

Compulsory inclusion of charging points in all new houses (DfT 2018) and likely concentrated uptake of EVs could exaggerate challenges faced by network companies. These are compounded by multiple layers of governance for planning, transport and electricity systems.

A UKERC Taskforce of academics and other stakeholders is being convened, chaired by a senior planning academic. The Taskforce will take evidence of three case study areas chosen using a new Royal Town Planning Institute database of housing scheme permissions granted between 2012-17. It will use deliberative engagement to map governance structures and barriers to integration, and make recommendations for planning reform.
